KEY FEATURES OF ANTS

 

Queen ants can lay varying amounts of eggs during their lifetime, which typically hatch into legless infants after three to four weeks. The larvae will mature over the next three weeks and then become adults following pupation in another two weeks. Mature males will usually depart from the nest by the end of summer to find females to mate with. After the males die, females will search for suitable nesting locations.

Black garden ants usually nest in humus and dry soil, but they can also be found in heaths.
